Video: Greg McWilliams on Rugby’s New Direction at Yale

The 2015 High Performance Coaching Conference took place Jan. 17-18 at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. Next Level Rugby’s Ryan Ginty interviewed Yale Director of Rugby and featured speaker Greg McWilliams about the conference, the immediate future of the Yale Rugby program and ways to grow the game in Connecticut and around the country. 

On the docket for Yale is a training trip to New Zealand and South American tour. Also coming up this spring for the Bulldogs: The Connecticut Cup and Division 1 AA Ivy Playoffs.

In Memoriam: Tim Dunning

We regret to announce sad news about a member of the Dartmouth Rugby family. Tim Dunning, who was the President of the DRFC in 1994, passed way last Monday, January 12, 2015. Tim has been described by his coach and teammates over the past few days as extraordinarily dedicated to both the DRFC and the sport of rugby and as someone you would always want by your side in any battle.

Being Deaf No Obstacle For Penn Rugger

During a recent rugby tournament at Dartmouth between the schools of the Ivy League, a successful goal kick by Penn Women’s Rugby Football Club fly-half Sophia Hu was met with an unusual reaction from the rest of the team. Rather than applauding and shouting encouragement, Hu’s teammates could be seen waving and twisting their arms in the air.

The maneuver is known as “deaf applause,” and for Hu, who has been deaf since birth, it was a special moment.

Dartmouth RFC’s Walmsley Named Rhodes Scholar

Colin Walmsley '15, a center on the Dartmouth men’s rugby team, will study anthropology at Oxford University as Dartmouth’s 78th Rhodes Scholar, the university announced this week. 

Following his studies, Walmsley, of Fort Macleod, Canada, hopes to "work as an advocate for human social justice and fairness," according to his Rhodes Scholars profile. 

At the College, Walmsley is an anthropology and government double major. He plays for the rugby team, hosts a weekly radio show on 99 Rock and sings with the Brovertones a capella group.

Brown Athletic Hall of Fame Induction

Jay Fluck Inducted into Brown Athletic Hall of Fame

Longtime Brown rugby coach Linton A. “Jay” Fluck was elected to the Brown University Athletic Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Nov. 8, 2014. 

Fluck, along with Dave Zucconi (’55) coached the Bears from 1980-2009, posting a 315-230-12 record. During his tenure, the Bears won eight Ivy tournament titles and qualified for nationals in 1996, finishing the season ranked #8 nationally. In 1984, Fluck led Brown to victory at the New York 7s, one of the most competitive tournaments in the country.

Dartmouth Sweeps Ivy Sevens Tournament

Dartmouth capped off its fall season with a successful weekend at the Ivy Rugby 7s Championships at Princeton. Displaying the depth of its program, the Big Green sent three sides to compete in the two tournament divisions. After a full day of rugby, all three teams emerged on top, as the 1st team was crowned champions of the A division, and the 2nd and 3rd teams were declared co-champions of the B division.

Cornell 51 - Harvard 12

Cornell traveled across New England to Cambridge, Massachusetts to take on Harvard this past Saturday. The Big Red got rolling early and kept scoring often on the way to a 51-12 victory. 

Eight-man John Schuler started the scoring with a try, and was quickly followed by center Andy Stasiuk on a powerful run. Scrumhalf Dave Chevarra made a penalty kick to put Cornell up 13-0. 

Brown men secure second with win over Princeton

Brown wins a close match against Princeton 24-20, scoring 4 tries to lock up second place in the Ivy standings. Princeton also scored 4 tries in a losing effort and racked up 2 bonus points in the standings, earning them sole possession of third in the league.

Dartmouth travels to Columbia and defeats the Lions by a score of 106-0.
