Dartmouth Rugby made a strong showing for itself Saturday in Day 1 of the USA 7s College Rugby Championship (CRC), winning all of its games and in turn its group. That doesn’t mean things came easy for The Big Green however, as they had to pull off more than a few stops to earn their unblemished record. Their accomplishment was especially significant because of the quality of their group, which consisted of defending champion Utah along with two strong teams in Notre Dame and Boston College.

Dartmouth will be looking to improve upon their performance in last year’s inaugural edition of the tournament in Columbus, Ohio. There, they finished second in group play after victories over Notre Dame and Harvard and a loss to Cal and then proceeded to bow out in the quarterfinals to a San Diego State team full of current national team players. They will have an equally formidable path to the championship this year, as they will have to face a much improved Notre Dame again in pool play in addition to Boston College and, of course, defending champion Utah.

Princeton had a tough draw against Army losing 24-5. Princeton then came out in round two and put it to Navy 21-5. In the third round Princeton went up three tries to one before losing a heart-breaker on the last play of the match 19-17. Brown did not look cohesive in their first two matches then came out of nowhere to pull off the upset of the day beating tournament favorite Penn State 12-10 in an epic battle. I spent the last match of the day next to Emil Signes as he calculated the point differential for the Army Navy final match of the day.
