Dartmouth chills Norwich in development side match
NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's rugby team lost 24-0 to Dartmouth College in a development side match in the snow on Wednesday night (April 6) at Sabine Field. Dartmouth scored at the 10th, 20th, and 28th minute of the first half. The second try was converted. Despite the snow coming down both teams displayed some solid fundamental rugby.
At the half, Dartmouth led 17-0. The Cadets held strong throughout the second half with some excellent attacking play by newcomers Chase Bullen and Curtis Spalt. The Big Green broke through the Cadets' defense at the 23rd minute of the half and made a tough conversion from the corner for the final score of the evening. The match ended with Dartmouth taking the 24-0 victory.
The evening saw six Cadets playing in their first 15s match with Chase Bullen, Curtis Spalt, Maris Riley, Jared Duhaime, Mike Basso and Cullen Gage. Junior Adam Depolo is a certified referee and this match was his first official assignment. Also seniors Jack England and Steve Nelson got their first taste of coaching, England with the forwards and Nelson with the backs. Junior scrumhalf Blair Woodley was the captain for the match.
"Even though the snow created sloppy conditions the boys displayed signs of execution and go forward. It was a new beginning for many involved and a snowy night to remember and learn from," said NU head coach Bob Weggler.
