NEC 7's Round One at Brown
Brown hosted round one of the NEC 7’s with eight teams traveling to Providence to compete for the top position. The NEC 7’s is a multi-week event in which teams can participate in as many events as they choose. After each event, points are assigned to the teams in the order of how they finished. Brown participated in this tournament last spring going 20-0 in games. To develop players, Brown is using the NEC 7’s as a developmental opportunity for some of the players. Most of last week’s starting group were held out and rested as they will be traveling to William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ for a tournament on March 7th.
On this day, eight teams participated in play.
⦁ Pool A consisted of: Brown, Bentley, Boston U., Stonehill
⦁ Pool B consisted of: UMass Lowell, U Maine, Southern CT, Wentworth
Brown won all three of their pool games to advance to the play-off rounds. The Bear’s first game was against Boston University. Brown won that match 26 – 5. Their second game was a closer match with Brown earning the 17 – 10 win over Stonehill. Their final pool game saw Brown come away with the 24 – 0 win over Bentley.
Brown earned the top seed from pool A and faced U Maine, the second seed from pool B. Brown’s strong defense saw them put up 24 points and concede none. This win placed Brown in the final against UMass Lowell who had won their pool match 24 – 17 over Bentley. The final saw a few speed bumps. Peter Smith was given a yellow card very quickly into the first half. UMass then drew first blood putting over a try that was then converted. Brown answered with a try of their own but was unable to kick the conversion. The Bears would head into the half trailing by 2 points for the first time on the day. Brown’s two second half tries (both converted) were enough to overcome UMass’s one second half try (also converted). Brown took the title with the 19 – 14 point win.
