Tigers Prove Too Strong For Cornell

Saturday, October 13, 2012

The Princeton men traveled to Ithaca, New York in cold weather to play Cornell for the second time in two weeks. Cornell, with last week’s game behind them, sought to reverse the outcome of last Saturday.

Play was hotly contested in the opening minutes of this match. No team could capitalize until the twenty-minute mark when the Tigers struck first. The Big Red quickly answered slamming between two defenders with a try by Jim Tregurtha ’15. That was not the last of Jim’s efforts, however, as he attempted to sneak one into the corner a defender laid him out of bounds. Not in time for him to lay the ball in field for Russell Browning Jr. ’14, who trailed close behind and was able to capitalize. With time running out Princeton squeezed one in as time expired to tie the score 10-10 going into half.

Princeton knocks on the resulting kick to give the Big Red a penalty on the 5-meter line. Benno Sorensen ’14 drills the kick through the posts to go ahead 13-10. Orange battled Red back and forth in the second half and there were four lead changes.  Princeton would score next but was diminished by a try a minute following by Ben Krenzer ’13. Cornell could not retain the lead as the Tigers tacked on two late tries to move on with the win 31-20.
