Penn Scores a Close Home Victory Over Columbia 22-18

With both teams coming into the game undefeated in Ivy South play, the match between the University of Penn Quakers and the Columbia University Lions at Penn Park promised to be a great match, and neither team disappointed. In a scrappy contest, the home team held off a late Columbia rally for a 22-18 victory.

The Quakers opened up the scoring with a try by Jaworski Weis, the end product of a powerful linebreak by Adambro Wnstein. However, after this initial score the game settled into a hard fought struggle with powerful running and strong tackling on both sides. The Lions caught the Quakers defensive line napping and equalized off a penalty, working the ball through the hands and putting down in the tryzone. With the missed conversion the game was tied at 5. Penn answered back with its own try off a penalty with a score by Frenchie G-G. After the try the two teams played out the half to a draw.

After a hard start to the second half, Penn’s undisciplined play around the breakdown resulted in a penalty kick for Columbia, which they converted to bring the tally to 10-8. Penn then threatened with a scrum on Columbia’s five meter, but some good defense by the Lions spoiled that chance. However, Penn’s Fonzarelli Collins would soon put one down for the Quakers. A true team effort the try involved a multi-phase attack composed equal parts of hard forward running and backline guile. 15-8.

The Lions responded and cut the lead to 15-11, when they put a penalty kick over, the result of more undisciplined play by the Quakers in the contact area. Spurred on by the encroaching Lions, Penn again marched up the field on a multi-phase attack and was rewarded when Bill Barron broke a tackle and glided into the tryzone. With the kick converted the score went to 22-11 and Penn would need all of those points. Following the try, Jaworksi Weis was sent off with a yellow card for dangerous play. Columbia was then able to use their man advantage to put over another try off a penalty take. However, the conversion marked the last play of the game and the score closed at 22-18.

In the 2nd XV match the Quakers continued their undefeated streak behind tries from Rampage Rempel, Andrew Johnson Jannsenns, Tim Dixon-Mason, and Cool Keith Kewel, with Rempel converting two of the tries.
