Sunday, April 22, 2012

Under the steady and inspiring leadership of scrum half Blair Station '12 and captains Chelsea Garber '12 and Mai Nguyen '12 Brown came out determined to push UVA off the ball and unleash a talented Brown line.

The first score came 10 minutes in when Chelsea Garber put a high up and under ball right behind the UVA line. Flanker Vanessa Munoz '13 hit the Virginia receiver hard and turned over the ball. The backline went to work and wing Patti Ekpo '15 put the ball way in the corner for the first score - Chelsea hit an impossible kick to put Brown up 7-0.

Eleven minutes later Brown stole a UVA scrum and Blair Station found Chelsea with a nice feed - Chelsea hit a seam in the UVA line, made the fullback miss and touched down under the posts. Still panting from the sprint, Chelsea converted her try and Brown was up 14-0. In the 35th minute Brown ran a penalty play feeding the ball to #8 Jessica Sawadogo '14 who dragged a number of UVA players 20 yards before being brought down, on the recycle the backline fed a hard running Patti Ekpo who scored in the corner - her second of the day and gave Brown a 19-0 lead going into the half.

The second half saw Brown facing a stiff wind - fullback Emily Hsieh '12 was masterful fielding deep kicks and keeping UVA out of synch on their attack. Ten minutes into the second half UVA was threatening deep in Browns half, UVA mishandled a pass and wing Patti Ekpo scooped up the ball and raced 60 meters down to the UVA 10- off the ensuing recycle Chelsea Garber took the corner on the UVA line and dove into the corner - again she converted the kick from a seemingly impossible angle to give Brown a 26-0 lead.

Ten minutes later UVA again was driving into Brown half when center Michelle VanderPloeg blocked a UVA chip and dished the ball to a hard charging Shakeela Faulkner '12 who ran 80 meters for the score, Chelsea converted and Brown led 33-0. Moments later UVA hit a penalty to bring the score to 33-3. Brown attacked off the kick-off driving deep into UVA's half - UVA was able to turn over a Brown ball and kick ahead - moments later UVA scored. Brown 33-UVA 10. WIth less then 2 minutes in the match Chelsea Garber kicked ahead and wing Shakeela Faulkner got her second score of the match chasing the ball down the line, scooping it up in full stride between UVA defenders and scoring in the corner.

The whistle blew and Brown celebrated a decisive 38-10 win.
