1st XV Yale Women at Dartmouth Women
Dartmouth Women's Rugby Dartmouth Women's Rugby 1st XV downs Yale WRFC 1st XV 36-5 on Brophy Field at the Corey Ford Rugby Clubhouse in front of an enthusiastic home crowd for the DRFC 60th Anniversary!
The first fifteen did not disappoint the large appreciative crowd on a glorious fall afternoon on Brophy Field, putting up 29 unanswered points with some exhilarating offensive drives in the first half. #10 Val Hanson TH’11 looked sharp as she played her first 40 minutes in over a year. returning from surgery for a knee injury sustained against Penn State in the 2009 National Tournament. Outside center Ashley Afranie-Sakyi ’13 scored three tries before leaving the game at half along with Hanson in a substitution plan designed to work on team depth.
Meg Thorn ’11, playing an outstanding transition game from prop in the first half to outside center in the second half scored on the outside after a nice series involving multiple phases of solid team offense, and flanker Theresa Cassano ’12 added an emphatic touch-down at the end of a driving maul. Rookie Katy Hwang ’12 had several nice runs in her A-side debut, one of which resulted in the final (and only) try of the second half. Annie Jones ’11, played a great game at inside center and converted three of the six tries.
The DWRC did not adjust quickly enough to an altered backline in the second half, and Yale came alive with several breaks on the outside, one of which ultimately led to their sole try. Ironically Yale’s escalating problems in the front row of the scrum added to their second-half surge, as the referee asked Dartmouth to ease off their drive in the interest of safety, allowing Yale to drive when they would have been immobilized.
