Penn takes it to Brown 40-24
Philadelphia, Pa. - The University of Pennsylvania came back from Saturday’s 78-7 thrashing at the hands of defending Ivy Champion Dartmouth to defeat Brown 40-24.
With rain clouds looming, Brown came out strong, sustained early pressure, and got on the board first with a penalty kick by Rabb, 3-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, Penn worked the ball through phases, with senior prop Matt Deluca barreling over for a try that senior flyhalf Jonny Chia converted, 7-3 Penn.
The wet pitch contributed to a scrappy first half and both sides were frequently penalized as they tried to earn supremacy at the ruck. In the 21st minute, Penn scrumhalf Andrew Martin found himself in the sin bin for a dangerous tackle.
Playing with 14 men, Penn grew into the game and Jonny Chia slotted his first penalty, 10-3. Just before halftime, Penn captain Mike Tully crashed over in the corner for a try that Chia converted, and Penn had a 17-3 halftime lead.
Second Half
Penn continued to ride the momentum, and five minutes into the second half a crushing maul lead to a try for sophomore lock Max Selig that Chia converted, 24-3, Penn.
Brown responded with a try by McGinn that Rabb converted, closing the gap to 24-10.
Jonny Chia hit two penalty kicks and converted the try of sophomore hooker Michael Masciandaro to push Penn’s lead to 37-10, putting the game out of Brown’s reach.
That did not stop Brown’s Harrison and Karwaski from scoring two consolation tries (both converted by Rabb) sandwiched around another Chia penalty, bringing the final score to Penn 40, Brown 24.
