Dartmouth Rugby team

The Dartmouth Rugby team prides itself on a unique team culture that breeds excellence, camaraderie, and leadership.

Year to year, the team carries around seventy-five players, coming from a wide range of athletic backgrounds.  While some team members arrive at Dartmouth having played rugby before, the majority have not, and the team counts among its members former American football, lacrosse, wrestling, soccer, and hockey athletes.

After learning the basic rules of the game and team philosophies on the development or "freshmen/sophomore" side, players then compete for playing time on the 1st XV and 2nd XV side, which are run in a similar fashion to a Varsity and JV squad in other sports.  However, because of the number and skill of the team's members, there is frequent overlap between the 1st and 2nd XVs. The team plays both a fall and spring season, and between the 1st XV, 2nd XV, and Development sides, the team plays an average of 65 matches in a given year. At the beginning of spring term a group usually goes on tour to play domestic or foreign teams we would not normally get a chance to play.

Dartmouth Rugby History

As the first American university side to tour the United Kingdom (1958) and Ireland (1962), Dartmouth has an extensive legacy of international exposure. Recent tours have found the Big Green in Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Cardiff, Dublin, and Rome competing against and training alongside some of the world’s most illustrious rugby clubs. Touring is just one of the many reasons why Dartmouth excels at developing numerous All-Ivy players, regional All-Stars, Collegiate All-Americans, and US Eagles.
