Yale 7s 2012
Saturday, October 27, 2012

Dartmouth is the first of three 7s tournaments in the IVY Rugby Conference this fall. This first tournament was a tune-up for the tournament at Yale next weekend (11/3). The results of the 7s tournament at Yale will determine the IVY North and IVY South seeds for the IVY 7s Championships at Princeton on November 10th.

Yale First VII Results

Yale opened the tournament against the defending champions. The boys were a little flat, played hard, but were defeated 32-0. Given some time to regroup and assess the first match, Yale then played a strong Dartmouth B-side and won 21-5. The team played stronger defense and were much more aggres-sively on attack. The third game was against Harvard. Harvard scored the first try and took the lead, 5-0. Yale battled back to tie the score, 12-12 at the end of regu-lation. The game went into overtime. Immediately off the kickoff, winger Dan O'Brien broke a long run down the sideline to get knocked out of bounds, just short of the try line. After a Harvard lineout, followed by strong aggressive defense, Yale was able to turn over the ball and score on the wing. Yale defeated Harvard 17-12 to earn the right to rematch Dartmouth A. Yale battled Dartmouth A once again, but their team speed and fresh legs (Yale was out of subs) was too much. Final score was 33-0. Overall, it was a good day of rug-by for the boys. We are looking forward to a week of training, and getting back the players who were away on break for the tournament at Yale next week.

Yale Second VII Results

With virtually an entire freshman team, the Yale B side stepped on to the field, never having played a 7’s match before. The goal of the day was to play hard, have some fun, and learn how to play 7s. Yale opened up strong, losing to a solid Harvard B side, 0-5. In their next match, they played Harvard C and lost 17-7, but the boys scored their first try. They ended the day against Dartmouth C, 24-7. For their first 7’s experience ever, it was a good day. Many lessons were learning and they got a lot out of the day. Congrats to Evan and Anthony for scoring their first 7s tries of their Yale Rugby Career.
