What Can Brown Do For Us?
If you were wondering who is the best women's team in the Ivies, wonder no more. Brown annihilated all in their path Saturday outscoring their opponents 145-0. They only played three matches!
The Cornell Women, expected to be tough for Brown, were the only team to make a game of it. But the lady bears from Cornell were unable to put points on the board, as the Brown shut them down and out, 15-nil.
What can Brown do?
They can represent the Ivies and go win the national championship! The Brown women head out this Wednesday to Balloon Fiesta Park, Albuquerque, New Mexico to compete in the USA Rugby D1 Women's col ligate sweet 16. Their first match is against NCAA Varsity West Chester University and then against the winner of the UCLA v. UC Davis match.
The championships (final 4 of rugby) will be held May 2-3, 2008 at Steuber Rugby Stadium on the campus of Stanford University.
Saturday turned out to be a great day for rugby. The crowds watched excellent rugby on a warm and sunny day in a beautiful setting on the campus of Brown University. Brown opened the day with a 52-0 domination of Columbia and ended the day strong taking out the Yale Women by a totally lop-sided, 78-0. Brown was dominant despite the fact that Emilie Bydwell did not play in the semis and finals. Emilie took a serious shot in the opening game v. Columbia.
With Brown leaving Wednesday for the Sweet 16s, the coaching staff decided to sit her for the rest of the day and take their chances. The results showed little signs of chance. USA Rugby U20 standout, Alicia Hartley, moved from wing to outside centre after the Bydwell injury and was terrific scoring a bundle of points. Brown also received huge production from their backrow, USA Rugby U20 select Alex Hartley, Nina Safane ‘09 and senior Thalia Beatty, as they dominated all day.
In other action, the young and talented Cornell looked very awesome defeating Dartmouth in OT before bowing to Brown. Cornell is expected to do well in 2009. Dartmouth also performed well defeating Columbia 36-0 after losing the OT match to Cornell.
In the consolation final, Dartmouth lost to Radcliffe in a kick off. Yale defeated the University of Pennsylvania in their first round match, then shut out a tough Princeton side to make it to the finals. Radcliffe won a spectacular kick off for a fifth place finish after being tied at the end of regulation with Dartmouth.
