Former National Player Katie Dowty Named Head Coach of Dartmouth Women’s Rugby

HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth Director of Athletics and Recreation Harry Sheehy announced Thursday the hiring of Katie Dowty as the new head coach for women’s rugby.

The women’s rugby program will be elevated to Division I status as the Big Green’s 35th varsity sport for the 2015-16 academic year. It had operated as a club team since its inception in 1978 with Deb Archambault coaching the squad for the past 28 years before recently announcing her retirement.

CRC Report: Dartmouth Falls in Plate Final

After a 20-5 victory over Air Force in the Plate Semis, Dartmouth could not overcome a tough UCLA team in the Plate Final of the 2015 Collegiate Rugby Championships in Philadelphia, losing to the Bruins 33-5.

McWilliams, Hickie to Coach Men's Collegiate All-Americans

USA Rugby recently announced the coaching staff for the AIG Men’s Collegiate All-Americans, and two of the three coaches for this elite squad hail from the Ivy Rugby Conference. 

Dartmouth Men’s Rugby Coach Gavin Hickie will assume head coaching duties. He will be assisted by Yale Head Coach Greg McWilliams (backs coach) and Clemson Head Coach Justin Hickey (forwards coach).  

Hickie, McWilliams and Hickey were chosen “following an extensive search of qualified candidates at home and abroad,” according to USA Rugby.

Hughes’ Eagles are World Series Tournament Champs

The USA Eagles sevens rugby team, led by Dartmouth’s Madison Hughes, defeated Australia yesterday at the Marriott London Sevens Cup Final to claim their first-ever World Rugby HSBC Sevens World Series championship. 

The Eagles dominated the Aussies on the Twickenham pitch before a sellout crowd, with Hughes, Danny Barrett (two) and Maka Unufe scoring in the first half for a 26-10 lead at the break. In the second frame, tries from Perry Baker, Unufe and Thretton Palamo (subbing for the injured Zack Test) kept the Americans firmly in control for a final score of 45-22.

Brown 17 - Yale 12

That's game! 17-12 @BrownRugby in a fantastic win against @YaleRugbyOn a windy day with temperatures in the mid 40’s, Brown defeated a good Yale team to keep alive hopes of advancing next spring to the Ivy Conference playoff in a quest for a birth in the national scene.

Harvard defeats Princeton at home 24-10

Harvard played a decent first half taking a 12-5 lead into the break. Two second half trys kept the Tigers from getting close. 

Come out to the Harvard Rugby team's last home game of the year vs. Princeton. The Crimson (2-0) are facing off against a strong Princeton team that just tied Brown last week. B side match to follow.

Yale vs West Virginia at Founder's Field in Pittsburgh

Yale’s Push for National Title Halted by WVU

The Yale RFC fell to West Virginia in the D1AA East Regional quarterfinals in Pittsburgh on April 25. The Bulldogs were the surprise qualifier at the regional Elite 8 level after defeating Brown in the Ivy Tournament. 

Yale struck first with Graham Harboe breaking through for the game’s first try. After that it was all West Virginia as the Mountaineers scored 17 unanswered points before halftime. Yale kept the pressure on throughout but was met with an outstanding defensive effort from WVU, who would pad their lead in the second half for a final of 29-8.

2015 Koranda Cup

At the annual Koranda Cup game between Princeton and Yale, Princeton retained the cup for the fourth straight year with a 31-12 win. The match was played at Yale University's Rugby Pitch on April 11.  

About the Koranda Cup

The annual matchup between Princeton and Yale continues with the 2015 Koranda Cup. Established in honor of the historic ties between the Princeton and Yale rugby clubs dating to 1873, the Koranda Cup was founded in 2003 in memory of Princeton alum Rob Koranda '02.

Elite Eight for Underdog Yale

For the first time, Yale Rugby have qualified for the D1AA National Championship quarter finals in Pittsburgh. The Bulldogs will play against West Virginia on the weekend of April 25-26.

After the semifinal win against Cornell, Yale faced a tough Brown side in the playoff final. In a match that could of gone either way, a final score of 18-13 means all roads lead to Pittsburgh for the Bulldogs.

Varsity Cup Round 1: Navy Edges Out Dartmouth With Nail-Biter

In Hanover, NH, Navy escaped with a 23-22 victory over Dartmouth. In a game that saw several lead changes, Navy managed to get the final blow, earning them a date with Clemson in the round of eight.

With both sides coming off recent matches, Dartmouth against St. Mary’s and Navy against Clemson, the stage was set for a physical and fast paced contest. The match was a physical battle down to the last minute with multiple lead changes and back and forth play.
