Ivy Rugby Weekend Wrap-Up for 9/23/13

Harvard warms up in preparation for Brown University

All 16 teams took to the field in the Ivy Rugby Conference this past weekend. The results had it all - upsets, lopsided wins, and matches decided by just a single try.

Men's Games

Princeton 17 @ Penn 24
In a battle of two teams separated by a few miles of I-195, the Penn Men's squad pulled out a tough 24-17 win over Princeton at home.

Dartmouth 91 @ Yale 0
Dartmouth continued their dominant start to their Fall 2013 season with a 91-0 road win at Yale. Freshman Max Parker scored his first try as a member of the Big Green during the match.

Columbia 15 @ Cornell 39
Chuck Motzer and Cornell successfully defended their home field against visiting Columbia with a 39-15 win. Columbia kept it close during the first half (the halftime score was 17-10) but Cornell pulled away in the second.

Harvard 28 @ Brown 21
Harvard pulled off an impressive upset victory on the road against a skilled Brown side as the Crimson won, 28-21. Brown led 10-0 early but a resurgent Harvard squad led by seniors Alex Cunha, Tom Shadewald, and Brendan Hanrahan finished strong and came out on top.

Women's Games

Brown 105 @ Columbia 0
Brown cruised to a 105-0 victory on the road at Columbia. In an all-around impressive performance, Brown was able to start their season off on a very positive note against a resilient Columbia side. The big win was Kathy Flores' first as Brown's head coach.

Penn 7 @ Princeton 53
Princeton made sure Chris Ryan's first game as their head coach was a memorable one as they defended their home turf and beat Penn, 53-7.

Yale 0 @ Harvard 84
Harvard continued the trend of women's teams celebrating the beginnings of new eras as they won big at home against Yale 84-0 in their first Ivy Conference game as a varsity team. New head coach Sue Parker led her team in a match in which all of Harvard's captains scored.

Dartmouth 24 @ Cornell 10
In what was the closest game of the week on the women's side, Dartmouth was able to pull off an impressive 24-10 win on the road at Cornell. Reigning featured Ivy Rugby player of the week Audrey Perez led all Dartmouth players with three tries.
