Dartmouth Captures Cup at 2016 Ariel Re Bermuda 7s
It was a big weekend for Ivy Rugby and especially the Big Green at the Bermuda National Sports Centre in Hamilton, Bermuda, where 5 high school and 12 college teams—including Yale and Columbia—squared off at the inaugural Ariel Re Bermuda 7s.
Dartmouth capped a weekend of excellent play by capturing the Cup on Saturday, prevailing over a scrappy Stony Brook squad 22-7 after edging Kutztown 12-10 in the semis. The second side captured the Shield with a 17-10 victory over Norwich.
Big Green went 3-0 on Friday with victories over Norwich, Columbia and Stony Brook to set the table for their Cup run the next day, where they shut out Yale before the semifinal contest with Kutztown.
Dartmouth II logged victories against St Joe’s and Yale II on Saturday to earn the right to play Norwich for the Shield.
Ivy Rugby makes good showing
The Ivies were well represented in Bermuda, with Yale and Columbia also in attendance.
Yale faced intense competition on Friday night, going 2-1 on the evening including a 19-7 win over Dartmouth's Seconds and a 26-14 win over the Boston Collegians. The Collegians would get their revenge on Saturday, knocking the Bulldogs out of Plate contention with a 12-21 win.
The Yale second side tested themselves against D1 foes, holding St. Joe’s to 2 tries in a 7-12 loss on Friday. and keeping Norwich close 12-20 in a hard-fought game on Saturday.
Columbia scored a big 29-17 win over Norwich on Friday to go 1-2 heading into Saturday’s title rounds, where they lost to a very talented Bermuda Rugby squad 0-36 in the Cup semis.
In all three Ivy schools participated, each fielding two sides over the weekend.
