In addition to collegiate select sides, the Capital Selects will face the USA Rugby South Panthers in a senior men’s high-performance match and the Capital Selects will compete against the Empire Selects and Allegany Selects in women’s high-performance action. Raleigh Rugby Club will host the event at their beautiful Poole Road Rugby facility.
Collegiate Conference All Star teams and Union Select Sides gather for a High-Performance weekend
Scott Zavrel, Commissioner of the Chesapeake Collegiate Conference, is excited at the prospect of creating High-Performance opportunities for his membership. Commissioner Zavrel commented.
"When discussions began for those Clubs that currently make up the Chesapeake Conference, we identified a huge need for player and program development which included identifying pathways for our players to go past their 4 or 5 years in college. If we can provide these Select Side opportunities for our elite players and our Futures Cup competition for those younger players, we believe these opportunities will improve the level of competitiveness for each of our Clubs' and result in a better product on the field for not only our Conference play, but also rugby on the East Coast."
David LaFlamme, Ivy Collegiate Conference Match Secretary and Brown University’s Head Rugby Coach, is looking forward to the opportunity to showcase his players and his league:
“Playing in an event such as this helps to increase the mutual respect and camaraderie of the players and the coaches involved. Playing against and with players who are the best in their league means that each player must raise their game and work to adapt to the styles of players and coaches around them. For those wishing to play at that next level, it’s an opportunity to get out there in front of a number of sets of eyes who might be looking for those next level players. Overall, it’s a good way to promote our league and showcase the talent of the players from each university.”
The Capital Rugby Union is looking for ways to enhance our men’s and women’s club athlete experience while recruiting new talent. Per Steven Davis, High-Performance Director of the Capital Rugby Union:
“It is our goal as a union to develop and establish this pathway for them. If a player knows that their end-goal is accomplished through a pathway starting within their union, then they can pursue their goals and use these events to showcase their talent.”
