It played more like what we know as football in 1896, but when Princeton and Yale met for the first time in 1873 it was rugby football that they played. Last week Yale traveled to Princeton to compete for the Koranda Cup established in 2003 in memory of Princeton rugby great Rob Koranda.

In a great day of rugby. Princeton held onto the cup for the third year in a row, winning 32-22.

Rob Koranda

The Princeton vs. Yale rugby rivalry has strong historic roots dating back to the 1870s. In 2002, after many years of not playing Yale regularly, Princeton decided to re-establish the tradition and challenge Yale to an annual match. The following year, Yale graciously accepted Princeton's request to make the match special for both teams by creating a trophy in memory of Rob Koranda. Rob died in a Chicago porch collapse in June 2003, a tragedy that claimed 12 other young lives.
