Harvard Men 72 - Cornell 8

The HRFC’s offense came to life against Cornell this weekend. Prop Joe Glynias started the scoring deluge off for Harvard with his first A-side try, which he scored off of a pick and go. This unconverted score gave the HRFC an early 5-0 lead. However, Cornell responded quickly by kicking a penalty to cut Harvard’s lead to 5-3.

The HRFC’s defense solidified and held strong for the rest of the match, which allowed the Crimson offense to operate with freedom and maintain its momentum. Harvard began to score tries one after the other to put the game away early on. Senior #5 Nick Torres scored a try off of a pick and go, which #9 Jaime Zobel converted to extend the HRFC’s lead to 12-3.

A few minutes later, Captain Gabe Cunningham broke through the Cornell line for a long run and offloaded to #13 Will Peck, who finished the run for the try, which Zobel converted (19-3). Sophomore #4 Ethan Winchell scored his first A-side try, which was not converted (24-3). Shortly after, #10 Gabe Cunningham offloaded to #12 Tom Schadewald who scored an unconverted try. Harvard took a 29-3 into the half.

The HRFC’s offensive machine did not relent in the second half. Scrumhalf Jaime Zobel took the ball into the tryzone himself after a scrum, which he also converted (36-3). Junior Nick Moore, #12 Tom Schadewald, #13 Will Peck, and 8-man Alex Cunha each scored a try in the second half, at a blazing pace with only a minute or two in between each score.

Sophomore Cody Cleveland, coming off of the bench, played a tremendous second half in which he scored two tries for the HRFC. Cornell managed to sneak though Harvard’s defense to score an unconverted try with a few minutes left in regulation. Harvard beats Cornell 72-8. #8 Alex Cunha was named man of the match for his unrelenting stamina and rucking performance.

Harvard will play at Dartmouth at Dartmouth next Saturday at 10am.
