Colgate Takes the Claret Cup from the Big Red
On September 6, Cornell University hosted Colgate for the annual Claret Mug match. Within the first 5 minutes of the match both teams swapped tries as Kwame Larbi ’17 crossed over for his first try with Charlie Murphy ’16 converting his effort and Cornell answering back with an unconverted try of their own. Colgate took advantage of a couple of Cornell miscues and slotted two penalties by Murphy ’16. Cornell struck again in the 20th minute but was unable to convert their try. Gus Gala ’16 and Zach Herzog ’16 capped off two strong and multi phased possession to dot down tries of their own but the conversions were unsuccessful.
First half score: Colgate 23 Cornell 10.
The second half was a little tougher for Colgate as we struggled to clear our lines a few times. This resulted in little possession and several goal line stands. The few times Colgate had possession we took advantage with 2 slotted penalties from Murphy ’16. Cornell would end up scoring 3 tries in the half, but not converting any of them. With the closing seconds in the game and with the lead, Colgate was able to secure possession from a line-out and kick into touch for the final whistle.
Final Score: Colgate 29 Cornell 25.
