The First XV Brown played a solid match defeating a young Yale First XV on a sunny late summer Saturday afternoon. In the second side match, Yale defeated Brown 15-5. Though Brown's 2nd XV was defeated, the Brown coaching staff is impressed by the intensity of numbers of their freshman class.

Most all of the scoring was done by the backs, the hard work up front by the forwards created lots of room for the backline to maneuver. The Bears enjoyed playing most of the match in the Yale half and with a bit more discipline could have added a few additional points. Credit must go to the front five in the scrum which was able to spoil a lot of Yale’s ball.

Right wing Scott Fielding scored two first half tries off excellent set up passes from fullback Blair Cameron. Not be outdone, left wing Dan Tonderys matched his team-mate with two second half scores, one on a 60 meter run, breaking several tackle attempts. Flanker Rob Bentlyewski added a try in the first half thanks to a successful driving lineout from five meters out to contribute a score for the forwards.

Fly half and captain Zahid Jethani and scrum half Matt Leonard showed good poise and skill as they varied the Brown attack and found space through, around and over Yale’s defense. Zach Long played a solid match at #8 and newcomers Kavin Nunez and Alex Lipinsky provided solid work at lock.

This match was a good Conference start for Brown and they face Harvard next week. Yale plays opposite Dartmouth.

Brown Second XV v. Yale Second XV

Brown’s Second XV, with 17 freshmen playing their first ever Brown Rugby match, distinguished themselves with intensity as they competed after only four days of practice. Brown freshman Connor Flexman scored the match’s first try with a quick break from a ruck from 20 meters out. Yale was unable to score in the first of three, thirty minute periods, but came back in the second and third periods with three unanswered tries.

This freshman squad is the biggest that Brown has had in several years and if the squad maintains its enthusiasm and cohesion, this team should develop well.

Final score: Yale 15 - Brown 5
