Brown finishes league play on top
It was a beautiful day to play rugby and Brown was ready for the Princeton Tigers when they came to town.
Play was tenacious on both sides of the breakdown until 13:03 when sophomore Sofia Rudin ran a dummy switch to her inside center, Oksana Goretaya ‘17 and then gave the ball to Kiki Morgan ’16 on an inside run to score up the middle. Rudin converted the try making it 7-0.
Princeton came back hard and pressured Brown who was still able to get down into the attacking 22m. At 19:42 a knockon by Princeton led to a 5m scrum which saw the Brown scrum drive the ball over the try line and Lauren Oxendine ’16 getting credit for the score. Rudin again converting leaving it at 14-0.
With the field still wet from the past rainy weather, a series of knock-ons and loss of possession saw Brown getting pushed back towards their own try. But a quick turnover by Daisy Alvarado-Munoz ’17 saw Brown back on track and Kiki Morgan giving the ball to Jasmine McAdams for a run down the sideline and score at 27:34 leaving it at 19-0.
At 38:09 with sustained pressure, Princeton drove downfield and in the attacking 22m until a knock-on and loss of possession saw the recovery by Morgan who ran 80 yards to score in the right corner for a score of 24-0. In the waning minutes of the first half, Princeton managed to score on a strong run by the outside center who crashed through and evaded several tackles to score in the middle of the posts. The conversion saw the half time score of Brown 24 – Princeton 7
Second half the Bears came out with renewed fire and at 46:47 forced a turnover in the scrum that went from Oxendine to SH Amber Reano ’16 who fed her two centers for the score from Goretaya under the posts. Rudin’s conversion made it 31-7. At 58:41 Oxendine again scored from a scrum walk over to be converted: 38-7. With Brown continuing their dominance at the breakdown inside the attacking 22m, SH Reano slips around the fringe to feed Elisha Miles ’15 for the score. Conversion sees the score at 45-7. Two more scores from Morgan and May Siu ’15 respectively sees 10 more points for Brown and a last minute score and conversion from Princeton leaves the final at 55-14.
