1st XV Dartmouth Women at Princeton Women
Dartmouth and Princeton, both with byes on league-opening weekend due to late fall terms, faced off this Saturday at Rickerson Field in a much anticipated re-match.
Last year, Dartmouth posted two close victories in fall 15s over Princeton then topped the Tigers one more time in the 2014 Spring Ivy 7s Championship Final.
Princeton came out hard and managed to put Dartmouth on its heels for the first 10 minutes of the match. But while Princeton’s forwards were formidable in the set pieces and their inside backs put good defensive pressure on the Big Green’s distributors, it was quickly evident that the DWRC’s summer fitness program and two week pre-season camp gave them an advantage that Princeton would not be able to overcome.
Outside Center Audrey Perez ’17 led the Big Green try count with 3, while 2nd row place kicker Michaela Conway ’15 scored a game-high 17 with 6 of 10 conversions plus the last try of the match. Fullback Diana Wise ’15 and wing Kerry Anne Conlin ’16 each added two tries as Dartmouth capitalized on Big Green speed out wide. #10 Tatjana Toeldte ’16 and #6 Yejadai Dunn ’16 rounded out the score card with one well-deserved try each, as both had outstanding overall matches. Princeton’s lone points came from a well-placed penalty kick early in the second half.
The Big Green has its work cut out for it this week as sorority rush takes a big bite out of players’ schedules during the lead up to next weekend’s important match against Brown. This week is also the first full week for rookie practices, as most fall rookies are finally cleared and ready to learn the game. Brown posted an impressive win against defending Ivy Rugby 15s Champion Harvard last Saturday and dominated in its match against an improving Penn side today. The DWRC will need to contain Brown’s hard-running forwards and limit high-scoring #13 Kiki Morgan’s touches on the ball in order to give Dartmouth’s exciting offense the opportunity for full expression.
