On a crisp autumn day at Cornell’s pitch the University of Pennsylvania Quakers and the Cornell Big Red battled to a 33-16 final. Penn, coming off a tie with the Princeton Tigers, looked to establish an early tempo.

Things seemed to be going to plan after Nabil Darwich ’13 dove over for the score from a penalty on a five-meter scrum within the first minutes of the game. However, the early momentum would soon dissipate as the Quakers lack of discipline in the breakdown and defensive line gave Cornell both territory and points; Cornell was able put through two penalty kicks to bring the score to 7-6.  Penn regained some of its rhythm and answered with a try by Jaws Weis ’15 that capped off some strong phase play from the backs and forwards, 14-6.  However, Cornell would tighten the game, 14-11, with a mauled-in try off a lineout in Penn territory, the result of another penalty from Penn’s undisciplined play. Penn inflicted more pain on itself when Drew Meyers ’14 was sent off with a yellow for the team’s persistent offsides. Some strong defensive play by the Quakers prevented the Big Red from capitalizing on their advantage and the score went into the half at 14-11.

The second half opened with both sides back at full-strength and playing at a stalemate for the first 10 minutes. The Quakers soon picked up the intensity of their attack and after some probing and clever kicks the Quakers won a penalty at the five meter-line. Eschewing the easy points Penn went for the try zone and was rewarded when hooker Frenchie G-G ’16 bombed in for the try. With Doug Swift ’15’s conversion the Quakers went up 21-11.  Following a yellow card to the Cornell men, points again came from a Quakers forward attack with prop Daniel Jesse-Raphael Zuvia ’15 trundling in for the try, 26-11.  The outcome of the game was assured when Bill Barron ’15 scored a try from a lineout, 33-11.  Cornell did not go quietly and closed the game with a long build-up that traversed the field and culminated in a try. When the whistle blew the score was 33-16.

Quakers 2nd XV Defeats Cornell

The Quakers 2nd XV showed up the first side with their explosive attack play and discipline in the contact area. They scored six tries in their game, all the result of hard work by the forwards and nifty hands by the backs. Rampage Rempel ‘16, the captain, scored two and was accompanied on the tally sheet by Andrew Johnson-Jannsens ‘16, Scott R.L. Stine ‘16, Quinn Diamond Kliman ‘16, and Tim Dixon-Mason ‘16.
