SHUTOUT: Brown Men 51 Penn 0
After several days of rain, game day was a picture perfect October Homecoming Saturday, with a good crowd of rugby alumni, families and friends in attendance. With all of these positives, the murky and unstable field conditions and a strong breeze were potential hazards to overcome.
Brown had the first half wind and within the first 20 minutes had asserted its control of all aspects of the game and taken a commanding 17-0 lead. This day turned out to be the Chaney Harrison’11.5 and Taylor Peak’12 show as the duo each score a “hat trick”. Brown’s 34 first half points, it’s highest output of the season, pretty much put the game away.
Penn was clearly outmatched in the forwards and although the visitors did some effective counter rucking and looked to score at several points in the match, the greater size, speed and handling of the Bears was too much for the Quakers.
Four of the six first half tries were from Brown lineouts. Lock Landon Turley’12 was dominant at number 4 which resulted in solid attacking platforms for flankers Stewart Lackland’13 and Brent Zajaczkowski’12 to power the attacks over the gain line. Ruck support from the front row of Micah Baclig’14, co-captain Danny Levine Spound’12 and Everett Epstein’13, along with lock Mike Wharton’12 was then instrumental in giving scrum half Matt Leonard options as he sent fly half Jethani’13, center Peak (2), flanker Stewart’13, number 8 Chaney Harrison over for first half tries. With the wind and mud, kicking was difficult but wing James McGinn’12 converted the second and third first half tries.
The most exciting try of the first half was on a kick off fielded and mauled by Zajaczkowski, off loaded to Stewart who broke free for twenty meters and passed to Leonard for a 50 meter try.
Penn was more effective at stalling the Brown attack in the second half with their effort and a strong wind at their backs. However, the Bears were able to whitewash the Quakers while adding three more tries: a 20 meter run back of a kick by wing Dan Tondery’s set up Peak’s third try, and then Harrison from a ruck and a lineout close to the line scored the last two tries of the match. Reserve fly half, Blair Cameron’13 converted the final try.
