Brown 29 - Penn 29
After the match the Brown team let out a weak cheer compared with Penn's boisterous celebration. The Ivy Rugby Conference 2nd place Brown Men's side had fully expected to add to its win column on its long ride from Rhode Island, but the team went back disgruntled just as 1st place Dartmouth did after playing Penn to a 5-5 second half tie in its 31- 5 win two weeks earlier.
Penn enjoyed both games more than its rivals did.
Penn captured the lead Saturday early in the game 7-5 and then built a comfortable 19-10 lead just before the half. Penn threatened multiple times to put the game out of reach, but the powerful Brown scrummers mauled the ball deep near the Penn goal line, got the ball out and scored to match an earlier try by Penn, and knotting the score 24-24.
Near the end of the match, a Brown wing broke free and raced 40 yards into the end zone. The conversion failed leaving the score 29-24 in Brown's favor. With two minutes remaining, Brown expected to gain it's long anticipated win, but Penn rallied penetrating deep into the Brown zone. After multiple rucks and plunges into the line the No. 3 from the pack broke tackles and passed to the trailing center, Alex Salazar. Salazar broke two more tackles on his way over the line near the corner. The conversion attempt was made from deep along the side line. As both Penn and Brown held its breath, the kick was long enough, but sailed just right of the posts. The match ended in a 29-29 tie.
Penn travels to Harvard next Saturday to face the Crimson.
