Dartmouth Downs Yalies in the Rain 60-0

Now 3-0 in Ivy Rugby Play While the conditions were far from ideal on Saturday for Dartmouth Rugby’s match against Yale, the Big Green was more than up to the challenge presented by the inclement weather.

Playing on a sloppy, muddy pitch and dealing with rain throughout the match, the team still managed to beat the Bulldogs 60-0, impressing a sizable crowd at Brophy Field that included College President Jim Yong Kim. With the win the team is now 3-0 in Ivy Rugby Conference play for the season, heading into next Saturday’s match at Brown.

While The Big Green’s margin of victory certainly was gaudy, Captain and No. 8 Paul Jarvis ‘12 said the team wouldn’t rest on its laurels going forward. “Every week we challenge ourselves to improve, and while we were very pleased with the result, there are certainly individual areas to work on,” he said. “Our set piece needs to continue to improve, and repositioning around the breakdown remains a crucial area.”

Much like the previous weekend against Cornell and Columbia, Dartmouth put their opposition in a hole early. Wing Justin Ciambella ’13 opened the scoring by converting on an early penalty to put the home side up 3-0. The Big Green wouldn’t continue to settle for penalties though, as center Clark Judge ’12 broke through the defense for the first try. With Ciambella adding the conversion to increase to the lead to 10-0, Dartmouth would enjoy a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.

Key to the Dartmouth attack was several great individual efforts by members of the forwards and the backs alike. Among the backs flyhalf Will Lehmann ’12, wing Kevin Clark ’14, and fullback Madison Hughes ’15 each notched scores. In addition to another from Judge and one by captain and No. 8 Paul Jarvis ’12, these scores helped stretch the lead, giving the Big Green a 39-0 advantage before halftime. It was then though that Jarvis decided to make the play of the day, taking the ball from behind his own 22-meter line and snaking in and around defenders all the way to the try zone on the final play before the break. The backbreaking try gave the home side a 46-0 lead and put the game well out of Yale’s reach.

In the second half, Dartmouth would continue to spread the scoring around, even getting the tight five involved. Lock Nate Brakeley ’12 and Hooker/Flanker Chris MacNaughton ’13 would add on scores of their own to bring the final score to 60-0.

Dartmouth will be back in action next weekend, as they take on Brown in Providence on Saturday, Oct 8th at 11 am. The team will return to Hanover two weeks from now for a weekend doubleheader, facing off against Princeton on Saturday, Oct. 15th and Penn on Sunday, Oct. 16th.
